Persib Bandung, still elated after their win over PSM Makassar, received a shocking notice: the derby against Persija Jakarta could not be held at their home ground. Instead, they would play at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (SUGBK) – a neutral sanctuary belonging to others. Questions erupted on social media: Why can Persija use SUGBK while Persib cannot? Is there hidden favoritism behind the walls of PSSI? To understand what is happening, we must look at the history of the two clubs. Persija Jakarta has always regarded SUGBK as home, even when their own stadium was unavailable. Persib Bandung, with hearts beating in sync with Jalak Harupat's goalposts, is one of the most beloved teams in West Java. Their derby is dubbed the Indonesian 'El Clásico' – watched by over 100 million fans. Any change in venue raises doubts about fairness. But the story is not simply one of power games. Behind it lies an invisible grass maintenance contract, a schedule signed months ago between PSSI (Football Association of Indonesia) and the pitch service provider. What we see today is actually a curtain drawn over institutional constraints. Specifically, Jalak Harupat is closed for renovation for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 – an international tournament PSSI holds in high regard. The entire turf has been stripped, treated, and reseeded. This process requires the stadium to be 'sterile' – no sports activity for weeks. According to Mr. Yunus Nusi – a senior PSSI official, the maintenance schedule was set in advance and cannot be changed because 'the contract with the supplier is fixed.' When asked why another stadium was not used as replacement, he replied that the decision was based on the technical condition of each pitch, and SUGBK was the most feasible option. However, what infuriates the public is not the technical reasons, but the perceived inconsistency in PSSI's treatment of teams. Just before this, Persija was still allowed to host official matches at SUGBK – a venue used for multiple events. What is the blind spot of collective memory here? We often assume unfairness stems from bad intentions. But in reality, it arises from the inflexibility of contract systems. PSSI could not extend Jalak Harupat's maintenance period because it was rigidly programmed. However, they could have moved the derby to another stadium like Patriot Candrabhaga or Wibawa Mukti, if truly fair. Instead they chose SUGBK – the easiest logistical choice. Perhaps the pressure from an international tournament and contractual constraints turned an administrative decision into a psychological wound for Persib and its fans. Truly, losing home advantage is not unusual in modern football. During the 2026 World Cup, many European clubs ceded their grounds to national teams. But in Indonesia, where football love is deeply local, such a displacement strikes at the very honor of both club and community. Fitrah Maulana, a Persib player, once said: 'I don't want Persib's dignity to be trampled.' His words sound like a wake-up call. So what lesson for the future? PSSI must be more transparent in scheduling pitch maintenance, and further, negotiate with suppliers for more flexible clauses when domestic league needs arise unexpectedly. When the derby unfolds on neutral ground, not only will the ball roll, but questions will remain unanswered.
