As the Vietnamese women's volleyball team left the court after the 2026 Asian Championship, Head Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt returned not only with a forgettable result but also with a daunting personnel puzzle. The 20th Asian Games (Asiad 20) in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, running from September 19 to October 4, 2026, is fast approaching, and the team is facing a looming crisis at the outside hitter position – the most critical role in their tactical system. At the recent Asian Championship, the team suffered a double blow: Nguyễn Thị Uyên, a crucial cog in the reception system, sustained a serious injury during the tournament. Meanwhile, Vi Thị Như Quỳnh, considered the player to share the attacking burden with Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, was absent due to health issues. This loss left the outside hitter corps with only three players, two of whom are teenagers aged 17 and 18: Bùi Thị Ánh Thảo and Phạm Quỳnh Hương. This represents a significant gap in experience and physical maturity compared to Asia's top teams like China, Japan, and Thailand, which typically field outside hitters in their prime years of 22-28. It is the result of a structural issue: over-reliance on a small group of key players and a lack of depth in critical positions. When a team relies on just two pillars, collapse is inevitable when one of them faces problems. The question now is not whether the team can win a medal at Asiad, but whether the coaching staff has the courage to accept a more modest result to invest in the long-term development of young talents. Sometimes, a well-timed defeat can be a more valuable lesson than a hollow victory.
